What happens to stray dogs that are injured?

If you find an injured stray dog please consider the following points:

  • Please contact the Animal Welfare Officer on 01902 551155, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am and 4.30pm on a Friday.
  • If the Animal Welfare Officer is unavailable or if the dog is found outside the above hours you could contact the RSPCA and ask for assistance. The following link will take you to the home page of the RSPCA or you could telephone them on 0870 5555999.
  • If you are able to transport the dog yourself you could take it to the nearest veterinry clinic where arrangements will be made for the dog to be collected when the Animal Welfare Officer is next available.

Humane treatment

Stray dogs taken in by the council will only be destroyed on humane grounds after seeking advice from a veterinary Ssrgeon.

If your dog is taken by the council as a stray and receives veterinary treatment due to its condition, for example it may have been hit by a car, then you will be expected to pay for the full cost of the treatment prior to having the dog returned to you.
