Chewing gum litter campaign
According to Encams, around 20 million people in the UK chew more than 935 million packs of gum every year. Most of this gum ends up being dropped on our streets, and once it is trodden in it can be extremely difficult and expensive to remove.
During the summer of 2007 Wolverhampton City Council worked in partnership with DEFRA and the Chewing Gum Action Group to address the sticky problem of chewing gum litter in Wolverhampton.
Environmental Information Officers distributed free gum-raps in a gum litter awareness campaign in an attempt to cut down on the amount of chewing gum litter stuck on our streets.
New 'smartbins' have been put up in the city centre to offer the public another alternative way to dispose of chewing gum and cigarette butts.

Fixed Penalty Notices of £60 are issued to anyone witnessed dropping litter, including chewing gum and cigarette butts.
