Rats and fast food litter

According to ENCAMS (formerly Keep Britain Tidy Group), food litter incidences have risen from 4% in 2001 to 22% in 2006.

ENCAMS held an awareness raising campaign about rats and fast food litter in 2006, and worked in close partnership with Wolverhampton City Council on the campaign.

Environmental Information Officers visited both primary and secondary school children across the city during the campaign and encouraged pupils to dispose of their litter responsibly, and not to fuel the ever-growing rat population. According to ENCAMS, there are now 60 million rats in the UK - which is equal to the human population.

ENCAMS ran a Rats and Fast Food Litter advert at cinemas throughout England in September 2006 to support the campaign.

Fixed Penalty Notices of £60 are issued to anyone witnessed dropping litter in Wolverhampton. This includes food litter, chewing gum and cigarette butts.
