Graduate and Registered Teacher Programmes (GRTP)

Graduate and Registered Teacher Programmes (GRTPs) offer you a way of qualifying as a teacher whilst you work.

The programmes suit mature people who wish to pursue a career in teaching but need to continue earning whilst undertaking their training.

Competition for places on the programme is very high with places going to the best applicants in each of the Teacher Training Agency's (TTA) priority categories.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for a place on the programmes are:

  • For the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP), A UK bachelor's degree or equivalent;
  • For the Registered Teacher Programme (RTP), you must have successfully completed two years of full-time higher education or the part-time equivalent (for example a DipHE, HND or the first two years of a degree course.) You will have to complete a degree before you qualify.
  • For both programmes you must have GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent in Mathematics and English. To teach in primary, you must also have GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in Science, if you were born after 1 September 1979.

Length of the Programmes

Normally one year for GTP and two years for RTP. If you already have considerable teaching experience, it may be possible to complete the programme in less time. The minimum period for the GTP is three months and twelve months for RTP.

Next steps

If you are interested in applying for a place, you need to:

  • Find a School that is prepared to employ you an an Unqualified Teacher, and support you on the programme;
  • Contact a Designated Recommending Body (DRB) or a Recommending Body (RB) with regard to apply for a place on the programme. For contact details of DRBs nationally, visit the Teacher Training Agency website.

Funding and salary

With GRTP, the school will pay your salary at the rate for an Unqualified Teacher.

With GTP the school may be able claim a grant of £13,000 which will assist towards employment costs, as well as a grant of £4,000 to cover the training costs. With RTP schools are only able to claim the £4,000 grant to cover the training costs, and have to meet the full salary cost themselves.
