The role of the home to school passenger assistant

Home to school passenger assistants accompany children who have special educational needs on their journeys to and from school.

The children range from four to 19 years of age and attend special schools or resource bases throughout and around Wolverhampton.

You need to be available at short notice, usually to cover sickness absence. You will be expected to accompany children on both morning and afternoon journeys on school days but not necessarily every day, and should generally be available between 7.15am to 9.45am and 2pm to 5pm.

Applicants will be expected to undertake first aid training provided by us, and to demonstrate a caring and mature manner. Some experience in the supervision of young persons would be an advantage.

Here are the benefits of working with us:

  • Decent pay - £6.02 an hour
  • Free first aid training
  • Moving and handling people training
  • Wheelchair restraint training

Gina's story

Gina is a home to school passenger assistant. She makes sure that children with special educational needs get safely to and from school. Here, she talks about a typical day.

'I meet my coach at 7.35am.   I have a quick chat with the adult who brings each child to the various coach stops so that I can tell the school anything they need to know. I also pass on dinner and trip money as well as medication forms that may need signing.

'I fill in a register as the children get on the coach, then I make sure their seatbelts are on before we are ready to move on.

'I always say "Good Morning", because like anyone the children don't always get out of bed on the right side. If they need cheering up I start to sing and it usually works. However a child once asked a teacher to come on the bus and ask me not to sing - I can't imagine why!

'When we get to the school, I get everyone off the coach and into the school building. Then I go into the school office with any dinner money, messages and forms.

'Then its time to go about my day. At 2.30pm I start all over again on the return trip.

'I love the job, it's most rewarding when you can make a little smile appear and turn the day round for someone'.
