Sensory Inclusion Service

Mission Statement

"To enable children with sensory impairment to attain their full potential."

The staff in the Sensory Inclusion Service includes:

  • Qualified teacher of the Deaf
  • Qualified teacher for the Visually Impaired
  • Mobility teacher
  • Deaf Tutor
  • Educational Audiologist
  • Nursery Nurse
  • Technical Assistant
  • Administration Officer

Who do we help?

We work with all children who have a significant hearing difficulties and those who have significant visual problems.  The children are referred to us from medical colleagues, schools and by parents.  Some children have both hearing and visual difficulties and these children too have support from the Service.

The support is given to,

  • Babies
  • Pre-school children
  • Primary pupils
  • Secondary pupils
  • Special school pupils

In addition to working with children we also work with,

  • Families
  • Carers
  • Staff in schools and nurseries

How can we help?

These are some of the services we offer.  Not all services are given to each child as it depends on the needs of the individual child.

Services available include:

  • Advice and guidance to parents and carers;
  • Advice to staff in schools, children’s centres etc.;
  • Hearing assessments;
  • Hearing aid management;
  • Functional assessment of vision;
  • Provision of Low Vision Aids;
  • Mobility training and risk assessment;
  • In-service training on request;
  • Support to class teachers;
  • In class teaching when appropriate;
  • Educational advice for Statements of Special Educational Needs;
  • Specialist information packages for students transferring to adult services;
  • Attend specialist clinics
  • Support for families;
  • Pre-school playgroup;
  • Signing classes for family and friends of Deaf Children;
  • Multi-agency working.
