What does the Special Needs Early Years Service offer?

This service supports young children with additional needs and their families in Wolverhampton.

The service aims, through early intervention, to support children from birth to five years of age who may have a disability or developmental delay.

Working in partnership with both parents and other agencies, we aim to provide a co-ordinated approach to supporting individual programmes encouraging each child to reach their potential.

The service is part of the Wolverhampton’s Child Development Service and works with the Early Years and Childcare Partnership.

Why might I need help?

Here are some areas we may be able to help you with:-

  • Your child has a medical diagnosis that may effect their learning
  • Your child may be showing signs of developmental delay compared to their peers
  • You may have concerns that your child is Autistic
  • Your child would benefit from a multi-agency approach to assess their developmental needs
  • You need guidance on accessing Early Support materials such as the family file and information booklets.
  • Your child is in a setting or mainstream school and is currently at Early Years Action, but may now benefit from specialist advice.

What Support can we provide?

We work in partnership with families and professionals providing assessments and individual programmes to support children.

We work in a variety of ways dependent on your child’s needs:-

  • Home visits to support individual play plans
  • Keyworkers to provide a co-ordinated approach
  • Child Development Services nursery groups at The Gem Centre or Wood End
  • Advice and guidance to settings, children’s centres or schools for children at Early Years Action Plus
  • Training courses for settings and schools
  • Training for parents
  • Parent support groups

How do I access support from the Service?

  • If your child does not yet attend a nursery and you have concerns or would like advice, then please contact us either through your health visitor or direct by phone.
  • If your child is already in a setting or school please discuss your concerns with staff who will make an appropriate referral
