Core work of the Psychology Service
The core work of the Psychology Service is assessment and intervention work with children and young people aged 0 - 19 where there are concerns about their cognitive, linguistic, sensory, physical or social and emotional development.
Psychologist's work with children and families in early years settings, schools and a variety of other locations.
The service offers advice to schools, families and other agencies involved with children and young people, and provides training and consultancy for other professionals (e.g. teachers) on applications of psychology.
In Wolverhampton, psychologists are members of multi-disciplinary teams, working closely with colleagues in the Education Welfare Service, Social Inclusion Pupil Support Team and Learning Support Team to provide support for children living within their area and the schools they attend.
They also work closely with colleagues in the Primary Care Trust (Doctors, Clinical Psychologists, Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists etc), Social Workers, the Police, Youth Service and other agencies.
What do psychologist's in education do?
- Assess young people's needs through observation, tests and discussion with parents, teachers and others who know the children well.
- Using a variety of therapeutic approaches help young people understand their problems better and make plan to solve them.
- Offer training courses and support for teachers, parents and other colleagues.
- Advise parents on how best to promote their children's development and education and manage any difficulties.
- Advise schools and other organisations on how to promote children's development and education, through research, projects and other activities.
- Work as part of a multi-agency group to offer young people the best support possible.
- Assess and advise students and other adults with educational and learning difficulties.
How to refer a child to the psychology service?
The Psychology Service has an open referral system - anyone can contact the service including children and young people themselves.
We encourage parents who refer to discuss concerns about their children with schools but referrals are confidential and if parents wish schools need not be involved.
When you contact us we will usually have a preliminary discussion with you about the problem and how we could help before a plan or appointment is agreed.
