School admission appeals

Any parent making an unsuccessful application for a school place in a maintained school is entitled to appeal against the decision.

How does the appeal process work?

Under co-ordinated admission arrangements all admitting authorities are bound by law to make such an appeal available to parents within a set of prescribed guidelines

For foundation and voluntary aided schools in Wolverhampton City Council, the responsibility for appeal arrangements rests with the school, and you should contact them directly for details.

For community and voluntary controlled schools in Wolverhampton City Council, the responsibility for appeal arrangement rests with the Local Authority.

If you want to appeal for a community or voluntary controlled school, you can do so by completing an appeal form. This form is sent to you if the admitting authority has not been able to allocate you a place at the school you applied for.

Returning your appeal form

When completed your appeal form for a community or voluntary controlled school should be returned to:

Wolverhampton City Council
Office of the Chief Executive
Democratic Support Unit
Civic Centre
St. Peter’s Square
Wolverhampton
WV1 1RR

Appeals panel

Appeals are heard by an independent panel. The appeal panel’s decision is final and binding on the school and the admitting authority.

If your appeal is unsuccessful, you may not appeal for the same school for the same academic year unless there has been a material change in circumstances.

Acceptance of a place at a school does not affect your right to appeal for a place at another school. However, if you decide to appeal for a place at any of your preferred schools, it is wise to secure a place for your child at an alternative school in case your appeal is unsuccessful.

Also by the time your appeal is heard, particularly for normal year of entry appeals (secondary school – year 7 and primary school – reception year), there may be few alternative schools which still have places available.

Wolverhampton Local Authority is always willing to discuss alternative schools with places available at any stage in the process.
