Toddler and carer groups

Based in the community at social venues, toddler groups are for children and parents opening at regular times during the week for a couple of hours. Groups can vary in type and have been established for the following groups:

  • First time parents / carers
  • Young parents / carers
  • Single parents and carers (including single fathers/carers)
  • Parents / carers of children with special needs
  • Childminders
  • Nannies and au-pairs
  • Grandparents.

Most toddler and carer groups only operate during term time and give an opportunity for children to play with different equipment and interact with other children. Groups also give parents and carers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position to themselves.

Benefits of toddler and carer groups

There are many advantages in attending a carer and toddler group for both you and your children.

  • They allow your children to socialise with others
  • Children have the opportunity to play with new toys and join in new fun activities
  • Give you the opportunity to socialise with other carers and so avoid the isolation that looking after children often involves
  • You can meet people who are in similar situations and so find support and meet friends
  • Sometimes professionals such as childcare workers drop in for advice and support purposes and answer any concerns or queries you may have.

Chosing a group

Chosing the right group for you and your child is important, so here are a few things to think about:

  • What sort of equipment and play activities are offered?
  • How close to your home or to good public transport is the group?
  • How many children attend the group?
  • Are parents and carers expected to help out or be involved in activities and play?
  • Is there a safe play area?
  • Can children or parents / carers with special needs accedd the building?
  • What age range of children attend the group?
  • Can older children attend during the school holidays?
  • Is there a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere at the group?

Staffing and qualifications

Carer and toddler groups are mainly voluntary and so depend on the help of volunteers to run them. The Early Years Partnership can provide details of courses and qualifications available to groups and volunteers about providing childcare.
