Language and Cultural Support
The council supports children who do not have English as their first language, operating in nursery and primary schools.
The council’s Equality and Diversity Education Service gives support to schools in providing for children and young people who do not have English as their first language.
The important parts of the service are:
- Teachers and teaching assistants working in classrooms to develop pupils’ English and home languages
- Providing training for teachers and teaching assistants in how to support bilingual children and young people
- Encouraging schools to use bilingual and culturally relevant resources
- Supporting and strengthening home/school links
- Working with children and young people who are newly arrived from abroad
- Providing training for teachers and teaching assistants in how to support children who are newly arrived from abroad, especially those who speak little or no English on arrival
- Teaching of community languages in school and at Saturday classes
