Overview of the fire alarm system used in the Civic building. This makes sure contractors working in the building know our procedure if a fire is discovered

Overview - The fire alarm warning in the Civic Centre is a two stage siren sound alert:

  1. Intermittent and
  2. Constant Tone

Stage 1 - Intermittent Tone- Pre-warning only

This allows for a short period of investigation by Civic Centre staff.

Your action - Stand by but stop any hot works in progress.

Do not evacuate unless you require additional assistance or extra time to exit.  If so, you should start to evacuate immediately.

If the alert is silenced, return to normal activity and task.

Continuous Sound

Make your work area safe e.g. close down equipment if possible, without delaying your evacuation or placing yourself at risk.

EVACUATE to the Lich Gates Assembly Point and report to the Fire Marshall.

Before beginning any work

Prior to arrival, all Contractors must ensure the following have been submitted

  • permit to work
  • method statements
  • risk assessments

On arrival, please sign in at the Business Reception desk

If you discover fire

Raise the alarm immediately using the nearest call point. DO NOT DELAY. This will actuate a full alert and the whole of the Civic centre will commence evacuation.

Tackle the fire using the portable extinguishers but only if it is in its early stages and if you have been trained and it is safe to do so.

Proceed to the Lich Gates Assembly Point across the piazza and adjacent to the War Memorial and report to the Fire Marshall.

Following Evacuation

Remain at the Assembly Point until it is confirmed that it is safe to return to the building.

Do not resume works until it is confirmed that this can be done without restriction.
