Crime Audit 2005-2008

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 placed a statutory duty on a wide range of agencies to work together to tackle crime and improve community safety and led to the creation of the Wolverhampton Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. This group brought together the Council's Chief Executive, the two Operational Command Unit Police Commanders for Wolverhampton and chief officers from the Primary Care Trust, National Probation Service, Wolverhampton Community Safety Partnership, Youth Offending Team, West Midlands Fire Service and the Drug Action Team.  The Partnership has overall responsibility for the production of the crime audit and the delivery of the Wolverhampton crime reduction and community safety strategy.

A great deal has changed since the publication of the first audit and strategy in Wolverhampton following the introduction of the Crime and Disorder Act in 1998.  In the subsequent six years the Wolverhampton Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has transformed into the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership, recognising the merger with the Wolverhampton Drug Action Team.  Drugs and substance misuse has always featured strongly in the crime reduction and community safety strategies. There are now national key performance indicators in place to measure the impact of work aimed at improving access to treatment, tackling the supply of drugs and reducing drug misuse by young people and in communities.

In producing this audit the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership not only want to present information on what has been happening in the City with regard to crime and disorder over the past three years, but also to find out what the challenges are for the Crime Reduction and Community Safety Strategy 2005-2008.  Please click on the link below to access the Crime Audit.

Safer Wolverhampton Partnership Crime Reduction, Community Safety and Drug Strategy 2005 - 2008

The introduction to the Crime Reduction and Community Safety Strategy 2002 – 2005 stressed the need for agencies, organisations and individuals to work together to achieve the greatest benefit for Wolverhampton. The last three years have seen a reduction in recorded crime of almost 10%. This achievement sits alongside initiatives that have tackled substance misuse, domestic violence and anti social behaviour.

The Safer Wolverhampton Partnership is not complacent. As good as the results are concerning the reduction in crime and despite what has been achieved, there is still more to do. Through consultation the Partnership is aware that the fear of crime remains high despite the reduction in crime and disorder and the environmental and physical appearance of communities affects how people feel about an area and their sense of safety. The Partnership recognises that it needs to use resources better to ensure a more co-ordinated approach to crime and community safety; and the Partnership needs to improve communication and consultation with people across the City to increase awareness of what is happening and build confidence.

In this, the third crime and disorder strategy for Wolverhampton, the Partnership has set a number of targets and priorities to start to tackle the fear of crime and increase reassurance. It will continue to work to reduce burglary, robbery and vehicle crimes whilst encouraging greater reporting of domestic violence and racial harassment with a focus on supporting the victims and dealing with the perpetrators. Substance misuse remains a priority with an emphasis on both treating those drug users who are arrested and targeting drug suppliers. Young people also remain a priority with the need to see how we can support and help victims and reduce offending.

Only by working in partnership can we continue to reduce crime and make Wolverhampton a city where people will not only be safe but also feel safer.
