Civil partnerships and benefits

With the introduction of civil partnerships, gay and lesbian couples have new rights and responsibilities and are in a similar legal position to married couples.

Importantly, the new law also affects same sex-couples who do not register as civil partners.

Couples who live together - even if not registered as civil partners - are now treated the same as opposite-sex couples who live together in terms of welfare benefits and tax credits.
