Diversity and the Community Plan

In recognition of this great diversity the Community Plan for Wolverhampton cites as one of its seven priorities “a city of communities and neighbourhoods ... [where] we will respect and celebrate racial, cultural and religious difference and live harmoniously together. No one in the City will be seriously disadvantaged by where they live.”

A cohesive community

Community cohesion happens when organisations, agencies and local people work together to get other things right. So, equality and social inclusion are key to achieving community cohesion. Achieving cohesive communities will help the City to realise its ambition of Wolverhampton becoming a city of communities and neighbourhoods.

What is cohesion?

According to guidance drawn up by the Local Government Association in 2002 Community cohesion is deemed to exist where:

  • there is a common vision and a sense of belonging for all communities
  • the diversity of people’s different backgrounds and circumstances are
    appreciated and positively valued
  • those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities
  • strong and positive relationships are being developed between people from different backgrounds, in the workplace and within neighbourhoods.
