Wyrley and Essington Canal - access for all

This canal is nicknamed the Curly Wyrley thanks to its twisting course.

A new steel footbridge will be constructed across the Wyrley and Essington Canal, providing a much needed route between valuable open space at Wednesfield Park and surrounding residential areas, to local shops, businesses and other amenities within Wednesfield village.

The bridge will act as a catalyst for the current regeneration of the canal corridor through Wednesfield Village Centre, making it a more welcoming place, and a new local landmark, attracting visitors onto the canal.

The footbridge will be of contemporary design, incorporating ‘open’ parapets enabling bridge users to view the canal from the bridge deck.  It will feature both ramped access and steps, and will span the canal and the towpath, a distance of approximately ten metres.

The location of the proposed bridge is between Pinfold Bridge and Church Bridge,to the rear of shops and businesses on Wednesfield High St.

The canal towpath in the vicinity of the bridge will be re-aligned and resurfaced.  Within Wednesfield Park, short link paths will be constructed to join the bridge to the existing path network within the park.

As part of the works, new orientation panels and fingerposts will be erected, within the park, on the canal towpath and on Wednesfield High Street.
