Fair trading
The Trading Standards Service enforces various 'Fair Trading' laws, the general name given to a host of legislation aimed at protecting consumers from being conned in some way.
The main offences cover:
- traders posing as private individuals
- traders displaying signs to reduce consumers legal rights
- traders using unfair terms and conditions
- use of misleading descriptions for goods and services
- failing to display prices
- use of misleading prices
- failing to provide and/or honour cooling off periods (internet, mail order and doorstep sales)
- sales of counterfeit items
If you think you have been subject to a scam of some sort or have been treated unfairly, please use our online form to report a rogue trader.
Guidance leaflets for businesses on fair trading laws and other areas are also available on the Trading Standards Central website.
