Weights and measures

The Trading Standards Service enforces a range of legislation relating to the use of weighing and measuring equipment, the sale of goods by reference to quantity and the labelling of goods subject to quantity control.

  • Equipment - please refer to the National Weights & Measures Laboratory for details of legislation and for guidance notes covering weighing and measuring equipment in use for trade.

  • Goods - for information on selling goods by quantity, the DTI have produced a factsheet giving an outline of the controls that apply.

Guidance leaflets for businesses on weights & measures and other areas are also available on the Trading Standards Central website.
