City centre improvements
There are several improvement programmes underway to improve the environment for pedestrians, making the city a more attractive and accessible place to live, work, study, visit and do business.
These improvements will bring great benefits to the city, ensuring that it competes with other town and city centres in the region.
The schemes will enhance some of the main shopping streets and pedestrian areas and make them more pleasant and attractive for all users
The improvements will also declutter streets and create spacious new layouts featuring high quality paving, new lighting, street furniture and attractive planting.
Improvements will also create new opportunities for public art and exhibitions.
Dudley Street and its surrounding streets have been comprehensively refurbished with an attractive paving, seating and lighting scheme. This has also been extended to Lichfield Street and Victoria Street.
Work continues on the refurbishment of Queen Square. Substantial work to underground services will enable the completion of a distinctive public area complete with new seating, lighting and a striking new water feature.
The square will also feature illuminated public art and will prominently feature the historic statue of Prince Albert.
The remaining scheme for the current financial year will be the widening and re-paving of the two lengths of the Molineux Alley that are in front of and at the side of the Molineux Hotel.
This work will run alongside the move of the archives which is expected to take place during January and February 2009.
