Introduction to the Gambling Act 2005
The Gambling Act 2005 introduces new procedures which will significantly affect the administration of gambling within the City.
The Council will be charged with issuing premises licences and permits for activities such as gaming, betting and lotteries as well as taking responsibility from the Courts for licensing gaming and betting premises.
Licensing Objectives
The purpose of the new legislation is the promotion of 3 key licensing objectives, which are:
- preventing gambling from becoming a source of crime and disorder;
- ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way;
- preventing children and other vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling.
The different types of licences and permits
The Gambling Commission will be responsible for issuing operating and personal licences under the new regime.
The Council will be responsible for issuing licences and other permissions for places such as casinos, bingo halls, betting shops and amusement arcades among others.
