Private hire vehicles

Private hire vehicles are only licensed to collect passengers who have pre-booked with a licensed operator.

We only licence vehicles for private hire which have a:

  • minimum of 4 passenger doors
  • minimum engine capacity of 1400cc
  • single bodywork colour.

Apply for a licence

Before you can begin working, you must apply for a drivers licence and a vehicle licence.

In addition, you must be registered with a licensed private hire operator.

Licences are renewed each year and inspections of vehicles are made on a regular basis according to age to ensure vehicle roadworthiness.

Fares

Fares for private hire vehicles are set independently from the council by each operator.

Get home safely

Take a look at our guide to ensure you get home safely by taxi.

Minibus licensing

We operate a voluntary licensing scheme for minibuses for non-profit organisations such as clubs and schools.
