Workplace Transport

Accidents involving workplace transport  is the second biggest cause of workplace accidents and accounts for about 70 fatalities and over two thousand major injuries each year.

What does workplace transport involve?

Workplace transport includes any vehicle used in a workplace setting, but excludes transport on the highway, in the air, on rail or in water.

What should an employer do to prevent or minimise workplace transport accidents?

An employer should focus on preventing the following accidents:

  • moving vehicles hitting or running over people
  • people falling off workplace vehicles
  • workplace vehicles overturning
  • objects falling off workplace vehicles

The employer should ensure that all drivers of workplace vehicles are trained and competent to operate the vehicles; that the vehicles are safe to use including appropriate and operational brakes, lights and steering; and that the site is safe including the separation of pedestrians and vehicles. That reversing manoeuvres are kept to a minimum or eliminated.
