How to pay your Business Rates

The following methods are available for payment of your Business Rates.

Direct Debit 

Direct Debit is the Council's preferred method of payment and can be made through your bank or building society.

All payments made by Direct Debit are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee - see below. 

If you currently pay by any other method and wish to change to Direct Debit, you may use any of the following methods:

  • Contact the Local Taxes Division to set up your Direct Debit over the telephone. Please make sure you have your Bank account details ready.
  • Set up a Direct Debit online using our secure service.
  • Download the Direct Debit Instruction below by clicking the icon and then returning it to the Local Taxes Division.

  • Complete the online e-form and a Direct Debit instruction will be posted to you
  • Visit the Civic Centre at:

    Council Tax and Business Rates Reception 12, First Floor
    Civic Centre
    St. Peter's Square
    Wolverhampton

The Direct Debit Guarantee

  • This guarantee is offered by all Banks and Building Societies that take part in the Direct Debit scheme. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own Bank or Building Society.
  • If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change Wolverhampton City Council will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.
  • if an error is made by Wolverhampton City Council or your Bank or Building Society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.
  • you can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your Bank or Building Society. Please also send a copy of your letter to us.      

Telephone Banking

You can telephone your own bank and ask them to make payment to the following Council bank account:-

  • Sort Code: 08 90 19
  • Account Number: 61123793
  • Reference Number: an 8-digit number as shown on your Business Rates bill or payment card

Credit or Debit Card

You may use the Council's 24 hour automated telephone payment line to make credit or debit card payments if you have a 'touch tone' telephone with a 'star' button.

The free phone number to ring is 0800 180 4464 (calls from mobile phones may incur a charge).

Please make sure you have ready:

  • Your Debit or Credit Card
  • Your account number
  • The amount you wish to pay
  • A pen to record the transaction number.

Online

You can pay your Business Rates online through the Council website using your credit or debit card. Please make sure you know your account number and the amount you want to pay. 

You can also pay your Business Rates online at the Bill Payment website if you have a Debit Card.

Anyone wishing to make use of this service should follow the straightforward registration process on the website.

You will be asked to quote your Business Rates account number, an 8-digit reference number, as shown on your bill.

Bill Payment is part of Alliance and Leicester and is not connected to Wolverhampton City Council.

Payment Card

You can pay free of charge at any PayPoint outlet or Post Office, providing you have a customer payment card which contains your unique Business Rates account number.

To pay, simply hand your payment card and payment to the cashier and they will process the payment. A receipt can be provided for your records. 

If you would like a Customer Payment Card please contact the Local Taxes Division or use the online form.

Post

You can send your payment by post by sending your cheque or postal order made payable to 'Wolverhampton City Council' to:

  • Please ensure you write your name, address and account number on the back of the cheque or postal order.

    Do not send cash through the post. 

    In Person

    Payment can be made in person at any Wolverhampton Homes local housing offices or the Civic Centre. 

    You can use your credit or debit card when you visit the Civic Centre.

    Opening hours are:

    • Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.00pm
