Released: Thursday, March 16, 2006
A number of restoration projects have been nominated for prestigious environmental awards by Wolverhampton City Council.
Three schemes in the city have been put forward for the Green Apple Awards 2006, which are designed to reward initiatives that promote environmental best practice.
The continuing restoration of the Molineux Hotel, the St John’s Square Conservation Area Enhancement Scheme and the restoration of 6-28 Mount Pleasant, Bilston, have been nominated for awards.
Winners will be announced in May.
Projects in the city have been recognised with Green Apple Awards in previous years. In 2005 the refurbishment of Creations, a fancy dress hire shop in Bilston won a silver award in the private sector category. The new Market Square development won a bronze award in the category for improvement to public areas.
Councillor John Rowley, Wolverhampton City Council’s Member Champion for Design and Heritage, said: “Wolverhampton City Council is totally committed to initiating and supporting the renovation of our heritage buildings.
“That commitment is being recognised through our successful participation in the Green Apple Awards Scheme.”
The Green Apple Awards are run by the Green Organisation and supported by the Environment Agency, SAVE Britain’s Heritage and the Municipal Journal.
Wolverhampton City Council also runs its own successful Wolverhampton Environmental Awards. Sponsored by Wolverhampton Partners in Progress, the scheme has helped to encourage a high standard of design in the built and natural environment with beneficial results for the participants and the city.
The council is also an active participant in the Civic Trust Awards, which aim to promote and acknowledge quality and excellence in environmental design. Wolverhampton has successfully attracted formal recognition for a variety of development.
