Read all about it - city celebrates National Libraries Day

Wolverhampton's libraries are supporting National Libraries Day on Saturday 7 February, 2015 by holding a series of events for all the family.

Central Library will be the focal point, with events throughout the day, and there are also activities at a number of branch libraries around the city.

At Central Library from 10am to 4pm, there will be competitions, crafts and poetry, enchanting tales with storyteller John Edgar and the chance to meet local children's author Paul Dowswell. His work will also feature in a display which also includes pieces by other local authors including Caitlin Moran and Sathnam Sanghera.

The Desi Bhangra Crew will be performing in the morning while a special plaque will be unveiled designating Central Library a learning destination for the Black Country Children's University, in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton.

Meanwhile, John Edgar will also be weaving his stories at Wednesfield Library and special storytime sessions will be taking place at East Park, Finchfield, Penn and Spring Vale libraries. Warstones Library will be hosting a coffee morning and other activities.

Visitors to any library on the day can also pick up an entry form to competitions with prizes including a signed copy of one of Caitlin Moran's books and a family ticket to Aliens Love Underpants at the Grand Theatre up for grabs.

Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said "We have an excellent network of community libraries right across Wolverhampton, and to mark National Libraries Day we've organised a wide range of activities for all the family.

"I'm particularly pleased that we will be using this important day to officially recognise Central Library as a learning destination for the Black Country Children's University.

"The BCCU is part of the National Children's University, which seeks to promote social mobility by providing high quality, exciting and innovative learning activities to children and young people."

National Libraries Day is supported by CILIP, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, SCL, the Society of Chief Librarians, SLA, the School Library Association, and The Reading Agency.
