Chance for young swimmers to make splash with Central lessons

Central Baths has currently got spaces on its swimming sessions for children and young people.

They are aimed both at young people who are just starting to learn how to swim as well as those who have mastered the basics but want to learn more.

Central Baths currently has vacancies on its stages 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 lessons, suitable for children and young people aged from 5 to 15. People are also invited to join a short waiting list for stages 4 and 7 sessions.

Stage 1 sessions teach children how to enter the water safely and to swim up to 5 metres, with Stage 2 classes develop these skills. Stage 3 classes are aimed at children who can swim 10m or more and want to improve their front and back crawl techniques, while Stage 4 builds on this by including the breast stroke and treading water.

Stage 5 classes are for those who want to be able to complete 15m using the front and back crawl and breast stroke and will also introduce the butterfly stroke. Stage 6 teaches children how to complete 25m using front and back crawl and breast stroke, while Stage 7 sessions will enable them to complete 100m using front and back crawl and breast stroke and 25m using the butterfly. Finally, children completing Stage 8 will be able to swim 400m continuously using the same stroke.

Central Baths also has vacancies on its duckling classes which help younger children become confident in the water.

Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said: "Swimming is an important - and potentially lifesaving - ability which children should be encouraged to learn.

"Central Baths' various swimming lessons will teach young people the skills they need to be confident in the water."

The 30 minute lessons take place during term time and are led by Amateur Swimming Association accredited coaches. Session cost £3.50 per child.

Places are available on a first come, first served basis and to find out more, please call Central Baths on 01902 552150.
