Final piece of major development completed

The final part of a major Wolverhampton regeneration scheme has been completed with the opening of a new supermarket.

Dhillon's, in Dudley Road, Blakenhall, will open its doors to the public on Saturday (2 November, 2013), following a £3 million investment to refurbish and prepare the 13,000 square feet store which will employ around 20 people.

The supermarket is part of the Blakenhall Gardens Development that has seen a total of 102 houses and 10 shops built on the site with the authority working closely with partners Keepmoat Homes on the scheme.

Work on the development started in 2011 and the opening of Dhillon's represents the final piece of the jigsaw.

Company director Suki Dhillon will be running the store with his 2 brothers and is following in the family tradition as his father runs a supermarket in Soho Road, Handsworth.

As well as selling fresh fruit and veg, meat and general groceries, the supermarket will sell a range of ethnic foods. Saturday's grand opening will offer people the chance to sample some of the food that will be sold at the store.

Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity, said: "I am delighted that the Blakenhall Gardens development is now complete and welcome Dhillon's store to our city.

"Providing good, affordable housing in the city is one of our key aims and this development has not only achieved that but also provided fresh opportunities for new businesses.

"There has been a fantastic overall transformation of the area recently and this development follows the opening of the award winning St Luke's Primary School and the Blakenhall Community and Healthy Living Centre."

Mr Dhillon said: "Our family has been in the trade for a number of years and we were looking for a site in Wolverhampton.

"Blakenhall Gardens is an ideal location and the store is the biggest unit in the development. We also believe there is a niche in the market for us in Wolverhampton.

"We are very pleased to be here and are looking forward to providing a service for people across the city and beyond."
