HGV management and signing

The routing of HGVs to and from industrial and commercial areas are in the main via Primary and Strategic Route network, as well as Significant and Local Distributor Roads.

This is to reduce the number of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) using unsuitable residential roads.

Many other roads within Wolverhampton City Area are unsuitable for use by HGVs, except for access. This may be because of weight restrictions, height restrictions, width restrictions or environmental weight limits.  The West Midlands Freight Quality Partnership, which is a joint working group made up of local freight operators, representatives from the Road Haulage Association, Freight Transport Association, Highways Agency and the Local Authorities, have produced Commercial Vehicle Driver's ROad Atlas 2005 which identifies these restrictions.

Abnormal loads

Any load being moved on public roads that weighs over 40 tonnes is classed as an abnormal load.

Roads considered not suitable for HGVs

Roads determined as unsuitable for HGVs are signed with restrictions. These require the legal backing of a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). TROs take around a minimum of 9 months to complete. If there are valid reasons for restricting the use of roads, the council will seek to introduce restrictions on roads that are considered unsuitable.
