Wolverhampton will be flying the flag for local independent traders today (Thursday 4 July) during a special dedicated day.

The city is hosting its very own Fourth of July celebrations by hosing Independents' Day, which is aimed at celebrating and championing Wolverhampton retailers.

WV One is supporting the Skillsmart Retail initiative to champion and celebrate the city's retailers on Independents' Day and there will be American style entertainment and free retro-themed sweet giveaways in Queen Square between 12pm and 1pm.

The new Shop In The Square, which is part of the High Street Innovation Fund initiative and showcases goods creative by local retailers, will also be open until 6pm.

People are being encouraged to buy at least 1 item from an independent trader today (4 July). Stores and market traders are displaying posters and making window or stall displays as bright and vibrant as possible to attract attention during the promotion.

Kim Gilmour, Operations Director for WV One, said: "Wolverhampton has over 300 independent retailers ranging from hair and beauty salons, opticians and jewellers to gift shops, vintage boutiques and craft shops.

"It is this diversity and skill set shown by traders that makes our high streets unique and we want everyone in the city to come out and support our independents."

Traders are being encouraged to offer customers something special or unique when they make a purchase today (4 July) and to spread the word by social media @Retail_IndieDay, facebook.com/independentsday.
