Burial

The Exclusive Right of Burial for a grave can be purchased either before an imminent funeral or in reservation for future use. In both cases the Exclusive Right of Burial is granted for 75 years.

Purchasing a grave before an imminent funeral

This will be dealt with by the person arranging the funeral - which in most cases will be the funeral director.

Our cemeteries page gives information on where graves are available.

Burials take place at all our cemeteries between 9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Reserving a plot for future use

Memorials

In each of our cemeteries, a temporary marker will be placed on a grave until a permanent memorial is placed there or approximately 12 months following the date of a burial in a new grave (whichever is sooner).

This is to allow the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial to the grave sufficient time to arrange for the placement of a more permanent marker.

The purchase and erection of a memorial in the form of a headstone or flatstone should be arranged by a memorial mason who must be authorised to work in our cemeteries.

Burial records

The burial records and registers for our cemeteries are held at the Bereavement Centre at the Civic Centre.
