Metro - Bilston Road Track Renewal

Essential Engineering Works - 11 June 2017 - December 2017. The Midland Metro Alliance is carrying out essential engineering works along Bilston Road, working on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

The tram line to Wolverhampton was originally build in 1999 and the tram track needs replacing between Priestfield and The Royal.

Why are you carrying out these works?

  • The Midland Metro tram line to Wolverhampton was originally built in 1999 and the tram track between Priestfield and The Royal stops needs replacing.
  • The new track being installed will have a longer life, reducing maintenance and future disruption.
  • The new track will also improve the ride quality offering a smoother, quieter journey for everyone.

When will the works start and how long will they last?

  • The works will start on Sunday 11 June 2017. The tram will be back in service by Christmas. 

What part of the line will be closed?

  • The section of Bilston Road between Steelhouse Lane and Stow Heath Lane.

Where is the tram running to and from?

  • The tram will be operating between Priestfield and Grand Central, Birmingham. This means that for the duration of the works, the tram will not stop at Wolverhampton St George's or The Royal.
  • There will be no change to customer journeys travelling between Priestfield and Grand Central, Birmingham. 

Will the Park and Ride at Priestfield be open? 

  • Yes, the Park and Ride at Priestfield will remain open for the duration of the works.

How will I travel to Wolverhampton?

  • Customers wishing to travel further than Priestfield will need to get off the tram at The Crescent and get on the replacement bus service (79E) which will be signposted.
  • Bus service 79 (from West Bromwich) and the 79E will run from The Crescent tram stop (Wellington Road), to Wolverhampton bus station Stand R, via Stow Heath Lane, Willenhall Road and Horseley Fields. All stops on the diversion route will be served.
  • Valid Metro tickets and passes will be accepted on bus services 79/79E.
